Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions (パックマン&ギャラガ ディメンションズ) is a compilation featuring previously published titles from the Pac-Man and Galaga series, along with two original games made for the compilation. The game was developed and published by Bandai Namco Games and released for the Nintendo 3DS in June 2011.

Overview[]

Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions is a compilation title featuring 6 games in the Pac-Man and Galaxian series (three Pac-Man games and three Galaxian games).

While four games are ports of previously released titles, Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions features two new games created for the compilation, those being Pac-Man Tilt and Galaga 3D Impact. The new games are designed with control features taking advantage of the stereoscopic display of the Nintendo 3DS and gyroscope. The classic games are also optimized for 3D effects on the Nintendo 3DS' stereoscopic 3D display.

Games featured in Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions[]

In the re-released titles, the bottom of the screen displays 16 unique achievements for each of the games, while Pac-Man Tilt and Galaga 3D Impact use the screen for various features. Among the additional features for Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions include multiple display options (upright, tabletop and direct screen displays with 3D effects for the former two options), Namco/Bally Midway artwork selections for the borders of Pac-Man and Galaga, score ranking features for all the games and a special Pac-Man 3D movie, which serves as the pilot to Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures.

Pac-Man Tilt[]

Main article: Pac-Man Tilt

In Pac-Man Tilt, the player controls Pac-Man as he ventures through each stage to get to the end, while collecting Pac-Dots and fruit and avoiding the ghosts. The player can tilt the Nintendo 3DS to make Pac-Man morph into a ball to roll down slopes and crush blocks, and can also tilt the system to move obstacles, such as swinging pendulums. Pink-colored obstacles, such as springs and pinball-esqe flippers, can be activated by pressing either bumper on the system. Power Pellets can also be collected, allowing Pac-Man to eat the ghosts for a brief period of time. Each stage also features a set number of Pac-Dots and fruit to collect, and the player will earn a ranking depending on how well they did on the level. Oddly for an early 3DS game, Pac-Man Tilt has no 3D functions whatsoever; presumably as the game's heavy use of tilting would result in an unstable 3D effect. All other games on the cartridge (including the original Pac-Man and Championship Edition) do have 3D functions.

Galaga 3D Impact[]

In Galaga 3D Impact, the player uses the Nintendo 3DS's gyroscopic sensor to control a fighter craft in an on-rail shoot-em-up game, and is viewed from the cockpit of the ship. The player must make it to the end of each stage by shooting down enemy craft, many of which are taken from the original Galaga and Galaxian games. Certain enemies can fill up one of six different meters shown on the touch screen; once either of these are completely filled, the player can unleash a powerful attack against enemy craft.

There are also items in the form of gold and silver emblems, which can be acquired by shooting down a Boss Galaga or by gunning down colored boxes that float around stages; gold emblems will give the player 1,000 points, while silver emblems will give the player either homing missiles or a laser that cuts through enemies.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first Pac-Man title to be released on the Nintendo 3DS, with Pac-Man Party 3D following in November.
  • This compilation celebrates the 30th anniversaries of both the Pac-Man and Galaga series.
  • The achievements for Pac-Man feature icons of sprites from other titles developed by Namco, including Warp & Warp, Rally X, Dig Dug, Toy Pop, The Tower of Druaga and other games.
  • The USA artwork selection for the arcade artwork in Pac-Man is modeled after the designs of the US cabinets manufactured by Bally Midway.
    • Notably, the Bally Midway artwork of Pac-Man and the blue ghost are edited out; large images of the in-game sprites are used in their place in both the upright and tabletop forms.
